There are a few topics of conversation that tend to always end in a heated debate within The Dad Network.

Dads smoking marijuana is one of them.

It seems to divide opinion more than most other subjects and is apparent to me that whether you’re in the States or the UK or whether it’s for medicinal use or recreation, more and more people are smoking the plant. It could just be that more people are becoming more open and honest about their habits, or maybe it is beocming more popular.

I recently discovered that as from 1st January 2018, it will be legal to sell cannabis in the state of California through licensed dispensaries for recreational use. As a Brit, this is completely alien to me, despite the experience I had when my ‘maths buddy’ tried to sell me some weed during mental maths back in year 8…

Anyway, I thought that with pot smoking apparently on the rise, it might be worth taking a look at the subject, so to start off, let’s take a look at 5 celebrity dads who unashamedly smoke the whacky backy.

George Clooney

Mr Clooney has always liked the finer things in life, including his cannabis. During the filming of Oceans 12, he was often photographed buying weed in one of Amsterdam’s most sought after cannabis shops. Since then he’s been back year after year. The question is, has he been back since becoming dad to twins? Obviously time for a joint will be evaporating fairly quickly!

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Back in his body building days, ‘Arny’ was seen smoking a joint after a workout. He’s more recently controversially stated in an interview,

It’s not a drug, it’s a leaf.

And then even more recently said to interviewer, Jay Leno,

No one cares if you smoke a joint or not.

It seems he’s pretty in favour of majijuana, whether for medical reasons or not.

Sir Richard Branson

He’s not shy about sharing his pro-pot views. It’s no secret that he rolled his first dooby in his 20’s and was taught by none other than Rolling Stone legend, Keith Richards.

He’s always been a supporter of cannabis for medicine, but in 2016 came out as an ‘advocate’ of pot for children. He said,

“If they’re going to have a joint, do it with them. Don’t let them sneak off and do it on their own.”

He’s been known to smoke it with his son, Sam, with the caveat, to not do it in excess, do not mix it with tobacco, and stay away from “skunk”!

Justin Timberlake

In an interview with Playboy(?!?) he said this,

“Absolutely… The only thing pot does for me is it gets me to stop thinking. Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high.”

To be fair, I can imagine being in the public eye as much as JT is, takes it’s toll and so maybe, just maybe, he has a good point. I guess this might fall under ‘medicinal purposes.’

Barack Obama

I know! I’m as shocked by this as you probably are. However, apparently, the ex-president, Barack Obama, has admitted to smoking Marijuana in his life time. He said that he,

Inhaled frequently.

I mean, this is all tabloid gossip. We can only go by what these guys say to the media outlet they’re speaking to at that particular time, but one thing is for sure, when you have child, you have new responsibilities. I’m not one to judge dads who do smoke pot, but my personal opinion is that I’d never do it.

But that’s just me. With very limited knowledge and experience to what is a more complex debate than I first thought.

What about you? What do you think?

In this day and age I see little difference between dads smoking a joint and getting drunk – in fact I’d be more averse to a drunk dad given the larger impact on their faculties (and in some cases, aggression et al) yet the alcohol is more widely accepted.

That being said – if you’re planning on getting yourself blazing on anything I’d recommend letting mum deal with the kid(s) until you’re sober enough to be useful again :D
