6 Essential Home Maintenance & Savings Tips For This Winter

6 Essential Home Maintenance & Savings Tips For This Winter

After one of the warmest starts to Winter, temperatures are dropping. Changes to temperatures can affect your home and garden, as well as your energy bills!

Here are 6 things to help your home and your bills straight away.

  1. Swap old bulbs with LEDs

LED light bulbs are much more energy efficient than the old fashioned incandescent bulbs. LED light bulbs last longer and are also much cheaper than they used to be. You can also get them in yellow tones so they look like the old incandescent bulbs! Switching to LEDs will save you money on your energy bills and save you money by not having to buy them as often.

  1. Save up to £260 on your energy bills

Surprising this one won’t take as long as you might think. There’s a new, free service that finds you a cheaper energy deal and manages the switch process for you.

If you’re on a standard tariff or haven’t switched energy in the last year then you can save up to £260!

There’s only one sign up (you don’t have to do it every year!) and it takes just 2 minutes to complete.

The service is called Look After My Bills and they made history on the popular TV show Dragons’ Den. Co-founders Henry and Will had all five Dragons wanting to invest in their service and they walked away with the biggest deal since the show started!

  1. Check your property gutters

We’re not normally aware of our gutters but they are important to protect our homes. When ignored for too long, experts say it can become a total nightmare. A blocked gutter can cause problems like a roof leak which can damage not only the exterior walls but the interior too.

But not many of us would have the time or the skills to clean our own gutters, plus it can be dangerous! It only costs £75 for an experienced professional to clear and check your gutter. They’ll remove all the debris and repair anything looking a bit loose.

  1. Check electrical leads and plug sockets

Electrical appliances are the 4th leading cause of house fire and most can easily be avoided by a quick check of your electrical leads and plug sockets.

This will only take a few minutes and it’s easy to spot the warning signs. Check if any cords are frayed of if they have any weak spots where they’ve been bent and twisted. You should also check if there are any black marks around the plug sockets.

Reminder: Homeowners can save up to £260 a year on their energy bills

The energy regulator has reported that you can save hundreds of pounds by switching to better energy deals.

Look After My Bills is a free service that finds you a cheaper energy deal and manages the switch process so you’ll never be ripped off again.

  1. Preventing Winter mold

Are your window sills starting to grow mold? Cold outside temperatures and warm inside temperature is the perfect environment for mold. Not only does it look awful, it can cause allergic reactions. To prevent this happening open your windows from time to time and let the air circulate. Wipe any condensation that appears on windows too. If it’s extreme or if you don’t want to open your windows you can invest in a dehumidifier.

  1. Use a chimney balloon

Fireplaces are great when the fire is roaring but when it’s not being used you’re probably letting all your warm air escape. Chimney balloons exist to stop all the air escaping from your chimney. They work by inflating to fill the width of the chimney and blocking the exit.

The cost of balloons depends on where you buy it from however we’ve found there are chimney balloons on Amazon for under £20. You’ll need to be extra careful to remove the chimney balloon before you light your next fire though!

Important: Don’t forget to take 2 minutes to save £260 on your energy bills

The energy regulator recommends that people switch energy providers to get the best energy deals and save money.

  • Why the picture of WD40 spraying in a toilet bowl?

    • This was exactly my thought. Already aware of all the other advice. Want to know what the benefit of putting WD 40 in toilet is 🥴

      • Here’s our #1 tip for removing tough stains from toilets. If you’ve got a stubborn stain that your normal bathroom cleaner won’t budge then you’ve come to the right place. Usually used for oiling bikes or fixing a door squeak, WD-40 is also incredibly good at removing tough limescale and mineral stains in your toilet. First spray the stains and let it soak for a few minutes. Then scrub with a toilet brush and your toilet will soon look good as new!

        • I’m sure the local water treatment sites would love people flushing wd40 down the loo

      • So the shits slide down without clinging on 💩💩💩

  • What’s with the WD-40 in the toilet?

  • My mum still gets bad black mold in her bathroom, and the window is left slightly open 24/7.
    What else can she do

Look after My Bill’s is probably the worst comparison/switching site out there as they choose the supplier for you and stitch automatically without asking you. Theone they choose will not be the best or cheapest supplier. Far better to use a well known comparison site and choose which one to switch to yourself.

Hi, there are a couple of typing errors in my comments which I don’t appear to be able to edit.

      • Jonathan, your comment is not entirely accurate. Yes, Look After My Bills will find the best deal for you and switch you but you still have a say if you want that deal or not. You as the consumer still have the ultimate say. For those comfortable with doing their own research and instigating a switch, then yes there are other comparison sites. However for those who are not comfortable about doing this, or do not have the time or confidence, then someone like Look After My Bills would be ideal and no, before you ask, I do not work for them or have any association other than having signed up to them.

    • Don’t leave it slightly open all the time! This is not useful and lets heat escape unnecessarily. Air properly for 15min after showering – window wide open, door wide open! Then close the window. Potentially use a hot air heater and/or dehumidifier in the bathroom.

    • It sounds like your mum could do with having sn extractor fan fitted. They work on a timer so only stay on for a couple of mi utes each time

  • I tried to post this and I got a message saying I’d already posted it, but I hadn’t
