The summer is coming and not only do we want to make memories, but we also want to capture them too. If you are heading abroad, staying in the UK or hanging out at home, there is bound to be plenty of action to capture. From swimming pools to mountain biking, having a waterproof or action camera to film your antics is a must. But we don’t want to splash too much cash in a cost of living crisis. So, it is possible to pick one up for under £400?

Well that is what JK and Al from the Don’t Tell Your Mum podcast wanted to find out. So they roped in camera expert Ian from MPB, an online platform that transforms the way that people buy, sell and trade in photo and video kit, to help them out.

Best action camera

Ian was in no doubt that the number one action camera is the GoPro Hero range. “They’re just incredible,” says Ian, “they’re super robust, you do just do anything with them.”

But it is not just how tough they are that makes the GoPro Hero a winner. It is also supremely practical. “I think there are thirty different mount options, from chest cam if you’re mountain biking to head cam, you can have a pole that spins around to give you a 360 degree view” Ian explains before extolling its other virtues, including its waterproof capabilities and the in-built stabilisation, which he describes as “wizardry”.

The GoPro Hero 10 shoots at 5.3K, giving you 2 frames per second in slow-mo at 4K. You can find a GoPro Hero 10 on MPB for around £350.

Other action cameras

If you are looking for something different, you could pick up the DJI Action 2. This innovative action camera is also waterproof and comes in at well under £400 on MPB.

It is drop proof, so you don’t need to worry about getting it involved in the midst of the action. This camera supports 4K/120fps video and offers a super-wide 155° FOV. The DJI Action 2 also benefits from a range of accessories that you swap in and out with its magnetic design, that makes easy work of adjusting how you shoot.

Another option from DJI is the DJI Pocket 2. It fits in your pocket (hence the name) and records in 4K, with handy features such as ActiveTrack, which follows your subjects around to keep them always in shot. Ideal when you’re trying to keep up with the kids. You can pick one up for between £200 and £300 on MPB.
