I thought this would be an interesting post to include under our ‘Health Recipes’ section purely because caffiene is one of those substances that slips under our radars. It’s come to light that Coco Cola have developed a new caffeine counter to help us calculate our daily intake.
Take a look here:
The interesting point I’d like to consider first is their helpful recommendation about daily intake whilst pregnant: 200mg. That’s just 2 mugs of instant coffee or 1 1/2 mugs of filter coffee. (You can have 4 cans of diet coke though…) This has the potential to put a lot of pregnant coffee drinkers out! My advice is replace it with an apple! – apparently an apple wakes you up in the morning far more efficiently than a cup of coffee anyway!
It’s also interesting from their calculator to see that a cup of tea contains 50mg of caffeine. So there’s little chance of compensating the lack of coffee with tea!
I guess this is all well and good, but surely we need to know why caffeine is so bad for us before we should worry about a caffeine counter! I did some research and this is what I cam up with:
# Caffeine is linked with insomnia
# Caffeine has been known to cause incontinence, headaches and indigestion.
# There’s also been a link with infertility for women
There’s plenty more out there, but to be honest, I think they are just scare stories. Everything in moderation is what my mother taught me and I think it applies here more than ever. Obviously hamburgers are linked to obesity which is linked to all kinds of hideous things, but it doesn’t make hamburgers bad. 10 hamburgers a day, is bad! The same applies to caffeine. Caffeine isn’t bad, but 5 cups of coffee, 3 cans of diet coke, 6 green teas and a whole bar of chocolate are!
