Households in England, Scotland and Wales will receive a £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme discount on their bills.

The government intends the discount to help households deal with the rising cost of living. This includes energy bills, which could grow substantially in October when the energy cap rises again. One research group has suggest yearly bills could reach an annual average of £3,500 before the end of the year.

Today, the government announced how it was going to distribute the energy payment grant. Essentially, you will get £66 discounted from your bill in October and November. They will then take £67 per month from December to March 2023. However, the way that you get your energy payment discount depends on how you pay your bills.

Energy Bill Support Scheme payment methods

Here are the ways in which you will get your energy payment grant:

Direct Debit customers

The energy company will take the required amount off your bill. This remains the same whether you pay monthly or quarterly for your energy.

Customers with smart prepayment meters

If you have a smart pay as you go meter, you will get the £66 or £67 added to your credit every month automatically.

Households with non-smart prepayment meters

For those with older style prepayment devices, the government will pay the Energy Bill Support Scheme through vouchers. These will arrive at the start of each month, by text, email or post, depending on your preference. Then, you need to redeem the voucher wherever you go to top up your credit.

Many charitable organisations are concerned about the nearly 2 million households with non-smart pay as you go meters. They say that they are often vulnerable people and that this system makes it more difficult for them to access the energy payment discount.

Other support measures for winter

This £400 energy grant will go to all households in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Irish households must wait to find out what is happening there. Stormont has devolved powers for dealing with energy, but whilst the power sharing government is not yet in operation, there is no one to make decisions over spending public money.

Other energy grants available this winter include £650 to low income families on certain benefits, with an additional £150 for disabled people. Plus, more people will qualify for the Warm Home Discount, which provides a one-off payment of £150.

Rising bills but rising profits

However, in the week when British Gas owner Centrica announced half-year profits of £1.34 billion, up from £262 million the previous year, many will ask why energy prices need to be so high for households so badly hit by increasing costs across the board.
