It’s a known fact that moving house is one of the most stressful things us humans face in life. It’s up there with divorce, death and losing a job. Throw into the mix a toddler and the whole process goes to a new level of stressfulness!

On top of dealing with the estate agents, packing and unpacking your entire possessions, organising removals & choosing a new school etc etc, you have to continue to look after the kid(s). And all of that is done whilst you’re hoping and praying that the chain doesn’t fall through and you lose your dream house.

Some of us may be lucky and can ship the kid(s) off to the grandparents for a couple of days whilst all the hard work happens, others of us are not so lucky. But don’t worry, we’ve collated a 8 top tips to make it marginally easier to move house with a toddler.

• Try to keep to the same routine
  

  Sticking to the same routine in terms of feeding, naps and activities will help lessen any stress the move may have. Easier said than done, I know. But think of all that hard work you’ve already done getting your toddler into some kind of routine; to change it now would be a nightmare.

• Keep one room free of clutter
  

  When you get to your new home, make sure that you keep one room free of boxes and other moving chaos! This will really help with sticking to the routine and also gives your toddler space to play.

• Keep your layout the same
  

  Ensure that your toddler new room, is closely laid out in a similar way to their old room. Lay out familiar toys, wall hangings, toys and soft furnishings so their environment hasn’t changed drastically.

• Start with their room
  

  When you move in, you’ll have a list as long as your arm of things you want to do to the place to make it your taste. Start with your toddlers space (nursery), so they get settled as quickly as possible.

• Have a bag handy
  

  To keep all you’ll need for a couple of days. Things like nappies, toys, food and clothes can be kept in here so you don’t end up frantically searching for your toddlers favourite toy to keep them quiet while you try to unpack.

• Make use of a play pen
  

  And if you don’t have one, get one! Keeping your toddler in one (safe) place whilst you unpack is such a help.

• Ask for help
  

  This tip goes without saying. If you can get a relative or friend to look after your little one on the day of the move, it will be a massive help!

• Transfer your home insurance
  

  In amongst the chaos of moving, it’s easy to forget various things. You probably won’t forget to get your TV & wifi sorted, but home insurance is likely to drop off the list, yet pretty vital. Especially when you’re moving your valuables from one home to another.

Moving house with a toddler is always going to present problems. They’ll be conscious of the big change going on and they may not like it. My last piece of advice, would be to make sure you communicate with them. Ted is nearly 2, but I’m learning that he understands a whole lot more than I give him credit for.
