Start-Rite Shoes for Kids | Babies First Shoes

Don't miss a thing

A baby’s first steps are an amazing thing. It usually comes at a cost though as you will now be buying shoes (if your child is anything like our first) every few months. Children’s shoes can be expensive but getting the correct fit and support is so important for their soft bones.

We all know that barefoot is best for new walkers but when you venture outside you need a little protection. Start-Rite make shoes from pram shoes up to school shoes.

We chose First Zak – Blue Boys Rip Tape First Walking Shoes. It says ‘boys’ but the beautiful bright blue leather is unisex in my opinion and is a nice change from the usual navy blue on offer from other brands.

The leather is supple meaning babies’ feet have room to spread. Both my sons have inherited their mothers’ wide feet, so we struggle to buy cheaper shoes from some high street shops as they don’t offer a range of widths. This isn’t a concern with Start-Rite as they offer four widths. This was perfect for our son and the shoe fits like a glove.

The strong Velcro fastening also means you can adjust the width by tightening or loosening the straps.

We had his feet measured in store but Start-Rite also have an online app available to measure your child’s feet at home. Alternatively, you can buy a foot gauge from their website to keep at home, something we will be investing in.

Back to the shoes…

Our baby is still in the early stages of walking and when tired he tends to start dragging his toes. The First Zak shoes have a brilliant strong rubber toe and heal which means both his little toes and the shoe are protected from scuffs and scrapes.

Like most babies our son has a habit of pulling off his shoes as soon as he gets the chance. The sides are slightly higher adding ankle support which along with the Velcro straps make it (nearly) impossible to pull off. I haven’t found a shoe he can’t get off yet!

Pros

Cons

  • Some might find the price is a little high for babies forever growing feet but we personally think the quality is worth it. In this case, you get what you pay for.

All in all, a great company making excellent shoes. If you have a little walker, these are definitely worth looking at.

Great read! All very accurate and I couldn’t agree more. My daughter is also a pro at pulling off her shoes ? we have stuck with clarkes this far but I think you have just swayed me.

In the end cost is a major part of the choice but always worth spending more for quality, especially winter shoes (frozen muddy puddles?)

We love start-rite shoes for our two as they have such narrow feet! Expensive but good quality and lasted a long time

We have been buying start rite shoes for Freddy since his very first pair.
They are not only great quality but last well as well.
They may be more expensive than some shoes but it’s definitely worth the extra money. We live locally to the business so have the benefit of using the factory shop in Norwich where the staff are really helpful & there are some real bargains to be had.

Could find a Startrite stockist down this way so ended up plumbing for the Clark’s option. Only as our little ones feet are quite narrow so needed something non standard & im no good at measuring feet either.

    Might get the gauge though!
Love that old skool one with the tape. Prob bit of nostalgia! Hate the new iPad app things they insist on using.
