Dadsnet’s Big Movie Podcast has a new episode out this week, looking back on the best films of 2022. Adam and Cockney John each came into the recording armed with their top three movies of last year to share with the class.
You can listen to the episode right now to find out what they have to say. Or read on to find out their verdicts on the year’s top flicks. And then listen later. Obviously.
Adam and Cockney John’s best films of 2022
Bros stars Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane as two commitment-phobic men in New York who fall for each other. It made the news last year as one of the first gay romantic comedies by a major studio.
“So funny, such a good message. But apart from that, absolutely hilarious,” says Cockney John. “It’s a spoof of the Hallmark holiday films, yet it is a Hallmark holiday film…it’s laugh out loud, bent over double laughing. And then all of a sudden, it’s got you really thinking about things. And it does all that within three minutes. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster film…one of the funniest films I’ve seen.”
2) Bullet Train
John’s second favourite film of the year was Bullet Train, the action comedy Brad Pitt vehicle.
“I knew what I was getting, I got what I was expecting and I was happy all the way through,” says John. “Ridiculous story, stupid action sequences, but just great fun.”
1) The Woman King
The Woman King tops Cockney John’s list of the best films of 2022. It stars Viola Davis in a historical story about the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit from the 17th to 19th centuries and who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey.
“One of the best films I’ve ever seen,” says John. “It has you gripped from the second it starts. It’s got the best fight scenes – it’s up there with John Wick.”
3) The Batman
Adam admits being concerned about seeing this Matt Reeves-directed Batman reboot. After the highs of the Christopher Nolan trilogy and the lows of Ben Affleck’s iteration, he didn’t know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. “It was absolutely brilliant,” says Adam. “Amazing villains in it, It was dark as well. [Robert Pattinson] absolutely smashed it out the park.”
The Baz Luhrmann biopic of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was one of the year’s biggest films. But that doesn’t always mean it’s any good. However, Adam feels that it was one of the best films of 2022. “It is fantastic,” says Adam, “Performance of the year…Austin Butler as Elvis Presley. If he doesn’t get the Oscar nod, then there is no justice.”
He also tells a hilarious story about his brother’s love of Elvis, which you will have to listen to the podcast to hear.
1) Top Gun Maverick
Adam’s favourite film was he long-awaited follow up to the 1986 smash hit Top Gun. Tom Cruise is back, and the Big Movie Podcast host can’t get enough of Maverick. “One of the greatest cinema experiences I’ve ever had,” says Adam. “The soundtrack, the acting, the story, the cheesiness, the corniness, everything about it…I absolutely loved.”
