The lockdown ban on children playing outdoor grassroots sport has finally eased and many professional footballers are desperate for their children to get back on the field. One such dad, David James MBE chatted about it on the Dadsnet Podcast, ‘Don’t Tell Your Mum‘. Talking with JK and Al, the England player talked about his passion for Grassroots Football, and its importance in making him a professional athlete, but also helping him socially.
“[Football is] more about the social activity, when you look at what’s involved in grassroots football you get back to the kids; it’s about their participation, its about the parents being involved, its about the volunteers [and] coaches”David James
2021 starting off with a three-month lockdown has made right now one of the best times to get out and start volunteering at your local club! It’s a brilliant way to get active with your children, but also get closer to the local community. Outdoor sports facilities are now open, but your local park can also be the perfect place to kick a football around in.
His England teammate Jamie Redknapp is also desperate to get his children back outside. To him the hardest part of the pandemic was how it affected his children, limiting their access to outdoor sports.
“It’s been such a tough time for kids, not being able to get exercise, not being able to get those endorphins and do all the things teenagers and young kids should be doing. Just getting kids out and about and exercising is so important because they’ve been stuck indoors.Jamie Redknapp
The footballer not only struggled to get his children to participate in grassroots sports but also talked about how this year has been tough for many parents dealing with homeschooling.
“It’s been hard – you question yourself as a parent – are they getting enough exercise, are they getting enough academic work done? When they’re meant to be doing a class and you walk in the room and they’re on their phone, what are you meant to do? Obviously, you don’t want to keep on having a go at them, you’ve got to try and find that balance of it being fun but also making sure they work hard.Jamie Redknapp
Whilst it has been hard for many parents to get their children not only exercising, but to do their schoolwork as well, with lockdown easing now is a brilliant time to get outside and participate in grassroots football.
