Understanding Google Analytics – The Basics

Don't miss a thing

Google Analytics is a bloggers most useful tool. However, it is almost a bloggers most confusing tool. I often think to myself that I would be better off deciphering hieroglyphics than aimlessly clicking on Google Analytics.

The basics however are not too bad to get your head round. Understanding Google Analytics is a really important aspect of blogging and one that can really improve what you do. This being said, I’ve struggled to find a Google Analytic Guide that paints a simple picture. As a result, I have taken it upon myself to create a basic Google Analytic guide. So I present to you:

Google Anayltics Explained: A 5 minute guide.
Google Analytics explained

We’re by no means an expert on Google Analytics but what we do know might just be useful. We’d love for you to share this info graphic on your blog, if you have one. If you found it useful, then your readers might too. If you want to use it, just copy “n” paste this code:

We’ve also recently been asked about self-hosting. We’re big fans of self-hosting and think that every blogger should be! It brings plenty of opportunities that you might have otherwise. We’re with a great British company called Kualo. If you’re thinking about it, take a look at what they offer. Their prices are really good!

Excellent stuff, very useful and something I’m now going to have to spend some time digesting (I hate that side of blogging).

  2. Rebecca Slinger

Useful? Just a little! I am such a technophobe I look at my GA page and start panicking, I will read and digest, and hopefully get to grips.

I have Google Analytics installed but rarely look at it as I didn’t understand it.
You have just put everything in plain English! Thank you!

I don’t have any problems understanding Google Analytics. I just have feeling that it misses a lot of my traffic.

I use blogger as my platform and trust me I know that blogger stats are WAY off. But sometimes my blogger stats will say I have 1500 pageviews in one day, and my GA will say I have 150. There is just no way that I am getting 1350 pageviews from bots and all that other stuff. I just wish I had an accurate and true count so I could make my blog better…

    • Al Ferguson

That is a big difference! Not sure what’s going on there but I will say that in my experience, analytics is much more accurate and when I was on blogger, I was disappointed. The difference was irritating – for me it was usually about half. So if I had 1000 views on blogger, in reality (according to analytics) it was 500.
