“A what?”

A linky.

“I heard, but what is a linky?”

Well, a linky is a way for bloggers to share their writing, get some comments and find new blogs. The blogger will connect or attach a link to their own piece of writing.

“Ah, so it’s a helpful way of getting your blogposts ‘out there.'”

Exactly! All bloggers want people to read their writing. They also want people to comment and engage with it. Linkys are fantastic ways of sharing your posts and getting people interacting with it.

“So how do they work?”

Ok, here’s the basics. The linky will be hosted by a host. Naturally. The host will publish a post once a week (or regularly). This is the host page that collates all the posts from the bloggers who attach their own blogpost. What you then get is 1 page on the hosts blog that has a link to all the other bloggers who join up.

“And that’s the post I need to link my post to?”

Yes, exactly. The post will contain information about how to add your link plus some etiquette, but we’ll come on to that later.

“Etiquette? What is this, golf?”

Ha! Kind of like golf but without the colourful trousers. Anyway, at the bottom of the hosts blogpost, there will be a small button that says something to the effect of, ‘Add Your Link.’ It might look like this:

Click on the button and you’ll need to add the following information to the relevant boxes:

The URL (web address) of your post that you want to link up.

Your email

Your name

A picture (usually, it automatically uses the image you already have in your post, but you can upload whatever image you like)

Then click, ‘done.’

“That seems pretty straight forward!”

It is very easy, once you know how. After liking up your post, it’s time for that golf etiquette to kick in.

“Pfft”

Being part of a linky is like being part of a community and it has a ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’ kind of mentality. After linking to the host, you might be asked to grab their badge and place it underneath your linked blogpost. The host will provide some code and it’s a simple case of copying n pasting it into your own blogpost’s HTML. It might look like this:

That will now display the badge on your post.

“So that’s like me giving the host a link back to their page in exchange for them hosting my post?”

Yep, you’re starting to get this now! But you’re not done yet. Linking up to a linky generally means that you have to comment on the hosts blogpost too. Either the actual host page or sometimes they will link up their own post as the number 1. Like this:

It’s really important that you comment on the hosts page – they’ve taken the trouble to set up and host the linky, the least you can do is leave them a comment saying thank you!

“I can understand that. After all, nothing in this world is free!”

Very true! Once you’ve commented on the hosts blogpost, you should really take the time to read and comment on some of the other linked up posts. Not only will many of them be good reads and interesting, but the point of a linky is to network with other likeminded bloggers. So get in amongst them! Some linkys contain rules and state that you must comment on a certain number of posts. Others are less structured and just ‘suggest’ it as a nice thing to do.

“Ah, I see. So I might find some great blogs to bookmark and follow?”

You’ll definitely find some great blogs and you should definitely follow them! Speaking of following, once you have linked up, added the badge and done your commenting, you can always tweet about linking up. Here’s an example: (Notice they include the hashtag, a link to their post and the hosts Twitter ID)

The host, more often than not, will then retweet your tweet! :) And there you have it, you’ve successfully linked up to a linky! Did that help?

“Yep! A pretty good guide to linkys. Thanks!”

Nice one, very thorough and a great idea to spell it out. I was totally stumped for about 2 years into my blogging career (honestly I didn’t join in a single linky until 2 years in *slaps forehead*) – I wish I’d seen this then! Thanks for linking up to #TheList xx
